Teas from our tasting last night

We had a great night tasting teas yesterday and as promised, here’s the list of all the teas we tried.

White tea

  • organic Yin Zhen or Silver Needle - the mellow, light and refreshing tea that we started the evening with

Oolong

  • organic Da Hong Pao or Big Red Robe - the slightly toasty, mildly astringent tea we prepared gongfu-style. An original Wuyi Yan Cha (Wuyi Rock Tea) from northern Fujian Province.

Black tea

  • organic Keemun Mao Feng - the elegant black tea (”burgundy of tea”) with slight fruity notes and a hint of chocolate. Mao Feng refers to the top grade of these black teas from Qimen Province.

Pu-erh

  • Mengyang Guoyan Phoenix of Yiwu 2007 - the sheng (raw) pu-erh we drank first. Light infusion, slightly floral, mildly astringent and very drinkable for such a young pu-erh.
  • 2003 Menghai brick - the example of a shou (ripe) pu-erh. Dark infusion, rather viscous (”good mouthfeel”) and incredibly smooth. I actually forgot to pour one infusion in time and the resulting tea didn’t get bitter or overpowering even after being over-steeped for 2 minutes!

All teas are available for purchase at the teahouse or online per email order.

    Hi,

I am new to tea tasting, yet I have always appreciated tea and drinking it.

I appreciate the list you have compiled and more noted is your review of the Da Hong Pao - the slightly toasty, mildly astringent tea we prepared gongfu-style.

Your wording astringent tea; makes me think of it as a rinsing of the palette or arousing one’s taste bud. I was sent a sampler of Da Hong pao tea from Jerry-Ma on EBay whose store in (Guangzhou China) carries this tea and it was most enjoyably a robust tea and full bodied. I have yet to sample more from his samplers since they are so strong. I do not normally drink black tea; caffeine keeps me up.

I was just saying thank you for sharing tea knowledge.
