Students put focus on sustainability

As a business who’s philosophy is strongly based on sustainability and minimizing environmental impacts, we’re always excited to hear about initiatives to raise awareness towards those issues.

We’re glad to live in a city which is home to a university that hosts a competition and workshops to make students’ life and lifestyle greener. The sustainability department of the University of Canterbury is hosting a competition called Eco-My-Flat this March with the goal to incite their students’ imagination and creativity to make their flat a more environmentally friendly abode.

Part of the Eco-my-flat campaign are weekly workshops on energy use, waste, transport and shopping. The highlight is undoubtedly a competition where flats are audited in a before-and-after fashion by “eco inspectors” who will determine which flat has gone through the biggest eco improvements during the 4-week period of the competition. Participating flats will have access to a resource pack and the advice from a group of “eco consultants”.

Winners in different classes will receive prizes ranging from the installation of free insulation to a weekend accommodation in the Catlins. We at Ya-Ya are proudly supporting the initiative with organic teas for the resource packs, vouchers for a relaxed tea-party at the teahouse and a bunch of t-shirts.

Our respect goes to the organizers of Eco-my-flat, we wish more people would take up the job of educating people as motivated as you do.
