Ya-Ya’s update on second large earthquake in Christchurch

[ IMAGE: road collapse in Christchurch earthquake ] Thank you for all your concerned emails and best wishes. I’m trying to answer all of you in due time, but things are rather chaotic in Christchurch the morning after the 6.3 quake yesterday and this way I can reach most of you simultaneously.

We are doing o.k., but many people who live or work in the CBD weren’t as lucky as we were. A few buildings have completely collapsed and due to the the time the earthquake hit (about 1 p.m.), a lot of people were affected in the central city. Our thoughts and love are with those who have injuries or deaths amongst their families and friends. We have only incurred minor damage to some of our tea stock and teaware. We have quite a bit of mixed green/black/oolong and white tea leaves on the floor of our storage area. While we don’t usually sell blends, maybe I should create a Special Edition “Quake Blend”? It would consist of some very fine leaves, but the result would be rather random…

I haven’t been to the areas affected the worst, but to give you an impression how much Christchurch resembles these “End-of-the-World” Hollywood scenarios, have a look at the picture at the top of this post. It was taken just 100m down the road from our house this morning. Scary stuff…

Alright, I better get back to cleaning the house and getting the trailer loads worth of silt (a product of ground liquefaction) out of the backyard.

    Hi Diane
I have been thinking about you so much for so long and would love to be in touch with you. Are you alright after the earthquake? I am thinking that you may not even be in NZ at the moment. Please write and let me know how you are.
    I love you always
    Paula

    Hi there,
I came across this amazing image on Google images while doing some research for a report I am preparing on the Christchurch earthquake for Rotary Down Under magazine. I’m wondering if I might have permission to publish it with credit to yourself and/or Ya Ya Tea House?
Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
    Warm regards,
    Meagan Jones
